Supg Stabilization Parameters Calculated from the Quadrature-point Components of the Element-level Matrices

چکیده
Abstract. We investigate, for linear and higher-order elements, various ways of calculating the advective limit of the stabilization parameter (“τ”) used in the streamlineupwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) formulation of flow problems. In the context of a pure advection test problem, we compare the “UGN-based” and element-matrix-based calculations and the calculations from the quadrature-point components of the element-level matrices. Our investigation shows that the performances of all three definitions are comparable, with the element-based definitions yielding somewhat lower τ values and the quadrature-point-based definitions somewhat higher. We also show that for both the element-based and quadrature-point-based definitions, as the polynomial orders increase, the τ values decrease, as they should.

Error Analysis of the SUPG Finite Element Discretization of Evolutionary Convection-Diffusion-Reaction Equations
Conditions on the stabilization parameters are explored for different approaches in deriving error estimates for the SUPG finite element stabilization of time-dependent convectiondiffusion-reaction equations. Exemplarily, it is shown for the SUPG method combined with the backward Euler scheme that standard energy arguments lead to estimates for stabilization parameters that depend on the length...
متن کاملDamped DQE Model Updating of a Three-Story Frame Using Experimental Data
In this paper, following a two-stage methodology, the differential quadrature element (DQE) model of a three-story frame structure is updated for the vibration analysis. In the first stage, the mass and stiffness matrices are updated using the experimental natural frequencies. Then, having the updated mass and stiffness matrices, the structural damping matrix is updated to minimize the error be...
متن کاملSimulation of incompressible flows with heat and mass transfer using parallel finite element method∗
The stabilized finite element formulations based on the SUPG (Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) and PSPG (Pressure-Stabilization/PetrovGalerkin) methods are developed and applied to solve buoyancy-driven incompressible flows with heat and mass transfer. The SUPG stabilization term allows us to solve flow problems at high speeds (advection dominant flows) and the PSPG term eliminates instabilit...
متن کاملSUPG reduced order models for convection-dominated convection-diffusion-reaction equations
This paper presents a Streamline-Upwind Petrov–Galerkin (SUPG) reduced order model (ROM) based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). This ROM is investigated theoretically and numerically for convection-dominated convectiondi usion-reaction equations. The SUPG finite element method was used on realistic meshes for computing the snapshots, leading to some noise in the POD data. Numerical ana...
متن کاملApplication of Decoupled Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method to Solve Eigenvalue Helmholtz Problems (Research Note)
A novel element with arbitrary domain shape by using decoupled scaled boundary finite element (DSBFEM) is proposed for eigenvalue analysis of 2D vibrating rods with different boundary conditions. Within the proposed element scheme, the mode shapes of vibrating rods with variable boundary conditions are modelled and results are plotted. All possible conditions for the rods ends are incorporated ...
